One line

Otterly is the serious dating app for singles who date to marry — built for people over 30 and the single-again.

Short

Otterly (otterly.club) is a serious dating app for singles who date to marry. Instead of swiping, members send a small number of requests with a personal note; every account is human-reviewed and verified members earn a blue tick. Built for singles over 30 and those starting again after divorce, separation or loss, Otterly has been downloaded 400,000+ times and is on a mission to help 100,000 people find their life partner.

Long

Otterly was founded in 2020 in Bengaluru, India after its founder watched three people close to him — his fiancée, his sister and his widowed uncle — face the same question at different ages: is it too late to find the one? Dating apps felt built for hookups; matrimony sites felt like a caste-and-dowry marketplace. Otterly is the third option: the seriousness of matrimony with the freedom and privacy of a modern app, and the individual — not the family — in charge.

The app replaces swiping with requests: members tap the detail on a profile that resonates and send a short note explaining why. Daily request budgets keep intent high. Every account is reviewed by a person before going live; a live-selfie verification earns a blue tick. Privacy tools are on by default — screenshots are disabled, photos can be blurred, only two letters of a name are shown, and members can hide from their phone contacts. Profiles carry marital status (Never married, Separated, Awaiting divorce, Divorced, Widowed), ideal marriage timeline, kids, belief and lifestyle — and no caste, income or dowry fields.

Signature features include Blind Love (one curated blind date a day, photos hidden until both say yes), fourteen Olly icebreaker games, AI compatibility and optional kundali synergy, and Spotlight and Pearls for visibility. Otterly is free with an optional Premium subscription, carries no ads and never sells data. If a member marries someone they met on Otterly, the company refunds 100% of their Premium spend and the couple becomes eligible for a $10,000 wedding sponsorship.

Story angles

Things we can speak to

  • The rise of “date to marry” apps between Tinder and Shaadi — and why the gap exists in India.
  • Dating after divorce and widowhood in India: stigma, second marriages, and the data from a community where a large share of members are single again.
  • Why limits beat infinite feeds: behavioural design for intent.
  • Safety for women over 30 on dating platforms: human review, screenshot blocking, contact hiding.
  • Building without caste, income or dowry fields — the pushback and the results.
  • A founder who took a vow of celibacy until 100,000 people find their partner. Yes, really.
