Dating again takes courage.
We try to earn it.
Everything Otterly does to keep you safe — and everything you can do to keep yourself safe — in one place. Read it once. Come back whenever you need it.
What Otterly does
Protections, on by default
Every account is reviewed
A person checks each new profile before it appears in Explore. Low-quality, casual or suspicious profiles never go live.
Human-reviewed blue tick
Live selfie with an “O” gesture, compared with your photos by a reviewer. The strongest trust signal on Otterly.
Photo checks on your phone
Photos must show a visible face; group shots and text-heavy screenshots are rejected before upload.
Screenshots disabled
Your profile cannot be captured inside the app.
Identity hidden
Photos can stay blurred until you accept someone. Only two letters of your name and your age are ever shown.
Contact never shared
Phone and email stay private. Nobody can spam-call you from Otterly.
Block an ex or coworker first
Hide yourself from anyone in your phone book — and them from you — before they ever see you here.
Conversation screening
Sexual pressure, harassment, hate, scam patterns and “move to WhatsApp” pushes are flagged and reviewed. Abusive messages can be hidden from you before you see them.
Report & block
Two taps. Seven clear reasons. Anonymous. Human follow-up.
Smiling Selfie Booth
A live, unfiltered smile. No catfish, no AI face. Only other selfie-takers can see yours.
Instant bans
Fake photos, misinformation, harassment and casual intent lead to permanent removal — even when it costs us users.
What you can do
The first-date safety checklist
Eight habits that cost nothing and remove almost all of the risk. Especially important if you are dating again after a long time.
Stay in the app until you trust them
Keep conversations on Otterly at first. Anyone who pushes hard to move to WhatsApp or Telegram in the first few messages is showing you something. Our screening flags this pattern automatically.
Video call before you meet
A ten-minute video call confirms the person matches their photos and saves you a wasted evening. Reluctance to video call is a yellow flag; refusal is a red one.
Meet in public, in daylight, on your own transport
A café or restaurant you know. Arrive and leave independently. A daytime coffee is a perfectly good first date, whatever anyone says.
Tell a friend the plan
Who, where, when. Share your live location. Agree a check-in time and a code word that means “call me with an emergency”.
Keep your drink and your phone with you
Watch your drink being made. Keep your phone charged. Do not leave either unattended.
Never send money — ever
Not for a “medical emergency”, not for a “customs fee”, not for an investment tip. No genuine partner asks a person they have not met for money. Report it to us immediately.
Protect your documents and address
Do not share ID photos, your workplace address or home address until you have met several times and trust is earned.
Trust the small alarm
If something feels off, it is allowed to be off. Leave. You owe a stranger nothing except basic courtesy.
Scam awareness
Six signs you are talking to a romance scammer
Scammers target kind, hopeful people — often those dating again later in life. Knowing the script is the best defence.
They fall in love fast
Intense affection within days, talk of marriage within a week, “I have never felt this way”. Real intent moves at the speed of trust, not of urgency.
They can never meet
Working abroad, on an oil rig, in the army, a doctor with the UN. Always a reason the video call fails and the visit is postponed.
Their story has a crisis
A hospital bill, frozen bank account, stuck at customs, a business deal that needs a small bridge loan. The crisis always needs your money.
They introduce “investing”
Crypto, forex, a “guaranteed” platform their uncle runs. This is one of the most common modern romance scams. Walk away.
Photos that look too good
Model-quality photos, one or two only, and refusal to send a casual selfie on request. Reverse-image search them.
They ask for your contacts or documents
ID cards, Aadhaar, passport, bank details, OTPs. Never.
Reporting
Report anything. We read everything.
Tap the flag on any profile or chat and choose a reason. Reports are anonymous and reviewed by our team.
- I don’t want them to see me
- Block & hide me from them
- Made me uncomfortable
- Incomplete profile
- Inappropriate content
- Stolen photo or fake profile
- Incorrect information
Outcomes range from a warning to a permanent ban. Fake profiles and harassment are removed on first offence.
The verification process is strict, which is annoying at first but honestly makes me feel much safer here.
This app made it feel normal and safe. Thank you.
Was skeptical about paying, but the crowd quality is better compared to other apps. No creeps so far.
Mental health matters too
Be as kind to yourself as you are to strangers
Dating after 30 — and especially after a divorce or a loss — can stir up more than you expect. Rejection stings harder when you have already been hurt. Comparison creeps in. Some evenings the app is the last thing you should open.
- Set a rhythm, not a habit. Ten minutes in the morning, ten in the evening. Otterly’s daily limits are designed to make this natural.
- Pause when you need to. You can pause your profile at any time from Settings. Nobody is notified; your matches are kept.
- A “no” is information, not a verdict. Every decline is one person’s preference on one day. It is not a referendum on your worth.
- Talk to someone. If dating brings up grief, anxiety or old wounds, a counsellor is a sign of strength. In India, iCall (9152987821) and Vandrevala Foundation (1860 2662 345) offer free, confidential support.
FAQ
Safety questions
How does Otterly verify profiles?
Two layers. First, every new account is reviewed by a person before it appears in Explore, and every photo is scanned on-device for a visible face and rejected if it has too many faces or too much text. Second, members can earn a blue tick by taking a live selfie making an “O” sign, which a human compares with their profile photos. The selfie is never shown on the profile.
Can people take screenshots of my profile?
Screenshots are disabled inside the Otterly app on the Explore screen. No system is perfect — a second phone camera can photograph any screen — but the ordinary “screenshot and forward” path is blocked, and photo blur adds a further layer if you want it.
How do I stop my relatives or colleagues from seeing me on Otterly?
Use contact blocking in Settings. Otterly matches hashed phone numbers from your contacts against members and hides you from each other — so an ex or a coworker never sees you. You can also blur your photos so they are only revealed to people you accept.
What happens when I report someone?
Reports go to a queue reviewed by our team. Depending on severity, the account is warned, limited, hidden, paused or permanently banned. Fake profiles, stolen photos and harassment lead to instant bans. Reporting is anonymous — the other person is not told who reported them.
Does Otterly do background checks?
No. Otterly does not conduct criminal background checks and you should never assume a profile has been vetted beyond photo and identity review. Use the safety practices on this page every time you meet someone new.
Is Otterly safe for women?
Safety is why Otterly exists as it does: no swipe-right culture, human-reviewed accounts, request notes (so “hey” and unsolicited photos are structurally impossible), screened chats, screenshot protection, blur, hidden names, contact blocking and fast reporting. Women also receive a much larger daily budget of requests so they can drive the conversation.
How do I report an emergency?
If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number first (112 in India). Then email GetOtterly@gmail.com with the subject “URGENT” and the two-letter name and age of the member so we can act quickly.
